TEXTBOOKS: ¿Qué tal?, sixth edition, by Dorwick et al., and Grammar Workbook to Accompany ¿Qué Tal?, sixth ed., by Maceri.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS CLASS: You will learn to communicate in simple Spanish. You will not be perfectly bilingual after taking this course. However, you will learn some basics about the language which will enable you to- continue the study of the language and learn it thoroughly. In addition, you will get an introduction to some aspects of Hispanic culture.

ABOUT THE EVALUATION: There will be 11 quizzes; the lowest grade will be dropped. The class grade will be based on participation. Obviously, in order to participate, you must be present in class. The oral exam will be given at the end of the semester. You will do the homework on regular paper which you will keep in a folder. We normally go over the homework in class. The assignments will include a header and will be numbered sequentially. The folder and the Workbook will be collected at unannounced intervals. The exercises for both items will be done outside of class. Handwriting will be neat. Grading for both is either "A" (complete & corrected), "F" (incomplete).

HEADERS FOR HOMEWORK: Assignments will be organized by chapter. Each assignment will have a header. Here are some samples:

Capítulo preliminar

Textbook p. 91 A Paso 1& 2, B
Capítulo preliminary

Assignments from the Workbook will be listed in your notebook/folder, but will be done in the Workbook and will be handed in separately.

EXTRA CREDIT: Some etxra credit activities will be available at Blackboard. Information on logging in to Blackborad is available at
http://maceriahc.blogspot.com/ Click on BLACKBOARD.

EXAMS MAKE-UPS: There will be no make up on quizzes, but the lowest grade will be dropped.

MATERIAL TO BE COVERED: We will cover the Pasos preliminares and Chapters 1-7.

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is absolutely required by the college and by the nature of this course. In this class, unlike others where you go and listen to the instructor and take notes, you are required to participate actively. Obviously, if you are not in class, you will not be able to participate. Please be prompt. Class starts and ends at the established times. If you come late, you may be marked absent. If you have more than five hours of absences, your grade may be dropped a full letter grade or you may be dropped from the class altogether.

METHODOLOGY: We use a modified version of the Direct Method. The approach consists of the following steps: I say something in Spanish and all of you repeat it. I tell you the meaning either by translating into English or by showing you a picture. I ask a question and answer it myself. You listen to the question as well as the answer, then I put the same and slightly different questions to several of you. When we finish the oral part, I will write examples on the blackboard and give you a brilliant explanation that will make everything clear. Sometimes my explanations are not so brilliant and you are then encouraged to ask questions. I prefer that you refrain from asking questions until after I have given my explanation.

GRAMMAR: This is not a grammar class. We emphasize communication, not grammar. However, once in a while I will use some grammatical terms which I will always clarify. I will not spend a great deal of time clarifying these terms which I consider to be basic and expect that you have already learned in another class. Some of these terms are subject, verb, object, adjective, adverb, article, etc.

CREDIT/NO CREDIT: This course is available on a Credit/No Credit basis. Credit/No Credit means that instead of getting a letter grade on your transcript, you will get CR (credit) or NC (no credit). You will get CR if you receive a grade of C or higher, NC for a grade of D or F.

TUTORING: Tutoring is available free of charge in the Tutorial Center located in the Learning Resource Center (library).

FINANCIAL AID: Financial aid is available in the Financial Aid Office.
